About

Lia Sina is a writer, editor, and forever California girl, originally from the Los Angeles area but now residing in the Bay. Creatively, she explores the complexities of womanhood, family and domestic structures, and the lifelong shadows cast by childhood. Her writing is character and relationship driven, often investigating the complicated connections between (odd, flawed, or otherwise otherworldly) people. Inspired by Kurt Vonnegut, Ottessa Moshfegh, Kelly Link, K-Ming Chang, Rita Bullwinkel, and George Saunders, among many others, her style blends the coexisting humor and tragedy of real life with hints of the surreal and absurd. Her favorite characters to craft are strange, angry, and emotional young women. She is currently drafting a novella with a protagonist of this nature.

In 2023, Lia was awarded the University & College Poetry Prize from the Academy of American Poets. Her winning piece was then published on Poets.org, and can be read here. In May 2024, she graduated summa cum laude from the University of San Francisco, obtaining a BA in English Creative Writing. Her coursework provided her with a substantial foundation in writing craft, editing rules and citation styles, literary theory, podcast production, and interviewing. She has also worked with multiple publishing houses and literary magazines in the SF Bay Area, such as City Lights, McSweeney’s, and antiphony. She is now an Editorial Assistant with Insight Editions.

Outside of the book world, Lia enjoys watching movies, baking, dancing badly, and daydreaming about the day aliens finally take her on a tour of the universe.
