Lia Sina is a writer, editorial assistant, and weirdo originally from the Los Angeles area but now living in San Francisco. In her writing, she explores the complexities of womanhood, family and domestic structures, and the lifelong shadows cast by childhood. Her work is character and relationship driven, often investigating the complicated connections between odd, flawed, or otherwise otherworldly people. Inspired by Kurt Vonnegut, Ottessa Moshfegh, George Saunders, Rita Bullwinkel, K-Ming Chang, and Kelly Link, among many others, her style blends the coexisting humor and tragedy of life with hints of the surreal and absurd. Her favorite characters to craft are strange, angry, and emotional young women.

In 2023, Lia was awarded the University & College Poetry Prize from the Academy of American Poets. Her winning piece was then published on Poets.org. She has also been published in McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern and The Core Review. Lia graduated summa cum laude from the University of San Francisco in 2024, obtaining a B.A. in English & Creative Writing. This provided her with a substantial foundation in writing craft, editorial rules and citation styles, world literature, and interviewing. She has also worked with multiple publishers and literary magazines in the SF Bay Area, such as City Lights, McSweeney’s, and Antiphony. She is now an Editorial Assistant with Insight Editions.

Outside of the book world, Lia enjoys watching movies, drawing, dancing badly, and daydreaming about the day aliens finally take her on a tour of the universe. She has an affinity for the strange, ugly, and overlooked, and is the self-anointed Rat Princess of San Francisco.
